Breed (and other) Info

The term “Cobberdog” refers to a relatively new breed that originated in Australia.

It was initially developed as a successor to the Australian Labradoodle breed which was  originally bred in the 1980s by crossing Labrador Retrievers and Standard Poodles for the purpose of creating a hypoallergenic guide dog.

The Australian Cobberdog breed was established to further refine the characteristics of the Labradoodle, with other breeds added all with a focus on developing consistent and predictable traits resulting in an Intelligent, intuitive, sociable companion dog with a low-to-non-shedding coat, suitable for people with allergies to other dogs.

Personality & Expectations

The Australian Cobberdogs are known for being highly trainable, affectionate, and good with children and other pets. They often make excellent therapy, service, companion and assistance dogs due to their intelligence and calm nature. Our puppies are bred from pedigrees and lines with strong therapy/service dog history. Our puppies therefore are sold with therapy potential but this must be realized by ongoing committment to training and consistency to get the best from your pet.

This is definitely a case of both NATURE and NURTURE hold equal importance, working in concert for best results!

DIET

We recommend balanced diet consisting of mostly raw and whole foods for dogs. Associated benefits for their health and well-being include:

  • Improved Digestion: Raw and whole foods are more natural and easier for dogs to digest, as they closely mimic what their ancestors would eat in the wild. This can lead to better nutrient absorption and reduced digestive issues.
  • Healthy Coat and Skin: The diet rich in essential fatty acids and nutrients from raw and whole foods can promote a shiny coat and healthy skin, reducing itching and allergies. I recommend incorporating coconut oil and sardines/oily fish into your dogs regular diet.
  • Dental Health: Chewing on raw bones and whole foods can help keep your dog’s teeth clean and strong, reducing the risk of dental problems like tartar and plaque buildup. Softer, cartilaginous bones like beef brisket are ideal for dental health!
  • Increased Energy and Vitality: Proper nutrition from raw and whole foods can boost your dog’s energy levels and overall vitality, leading to a more active and happy life.
  • Weight Management: A balanced raw and whole food diet can help maintain a healthy weight for your dog, preventing obesity and related health issues which can arise from commercial and heavily processed diets. Dogs have co-evolved with people over thousands of years. Commercial, highly processed foods are a very new development time wise and your dogs body is not evolved for ‘fast food’.
  • Strong Immune System: The natural nutrients in raw and whole foods can support a robust and healthy immune system
  • Fewer Allergies: Some dogs with food sensitivities or allergies may find relief with a raw and whole food diet, as it eliminates common allergens found in processed foods eg Chicken, Grains, fillers, preservatives and additives.
  • Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases, maintaining joint, muscle integrity.

Also this diet reduces the odour of their poop and they fart less! What a bonus.

Example Stew recipe

I make a healthy stew for my dogs which includes:

  • Beef meat. (Pasture raised not grain fed)
  • Human grade offal* (heart, liver, kidneys) from our local butcher *Each organ should not account for any more than 10% of the meat portion
  • Kangaroo meat. Great health benefits and when I add it in, they like the stew even more!
  •  Eggs (1 per kilo of meat)
  • Coconut oil, a tablespoon full per slowcooker portion. (Great for keeping their fleece shiny and healthy)
  • Tumeric (great antiinflamatory)
  • A  smidgen of iodized salt (Dogs dont need salt but I include this for the iodine only)
  • Add a combination of available vegetables which might include:

Leafy greens, celery, carrots, zucchini, sweet potato, pumpkin…

You can include pretty much anything EXCEPT ONIONS and GARLIC ( or only in very small quantities). If you are unsure about a vegetable or food – google it first from a reputable source.

I used to chop the veggies, but if your dog is a bit selective it might be better to process them, so they eat them alongside the meat without even noticing.

Quantity of food. Cobberdogs are not typically a greedy breed.  Miniature Cobberdogs should have roughly 250g meat per day. It is good to provide them with some variety so you are not just dependent on one meat type only.  Organic chicken is best but at least try to avoid preservatives and antibiotics for your dogs gut health.

I also recommend “MEALS For MUTTS” grain free kibble.

This is to have on-hand, as a backup  but should never make up the not to make up main portion of your dogs diet. The more natural the state of the food, the better for your dogs health, vitality and longegevity. (Same goes for us too – we are what we eat!)

.

Grooming

Cobberdogs have a lovely fleece which gives them a lovely teddybear look. They dont often need bathing since dirt/mud tends to fall off them and they dont really have much of a doggy-smell either.  You might like to brush your dog on a semi regular basis, perhaps while watching your favourite show, or take then to the groomers once in a while. If not brushed their fleece will become matted and then needs to be cut out which can leave them looking a bit scruffy-  best to keep make grooming and a trim a regular habit!
